Eleanor Dawson Pope
June 3, 1929 – October 20, 2019
Eleanor Dawson Pope, 90, went to her heavenly home on Sunday surrounded by family and loved ones at Kitty Askins Hospice Center.
Eleanor was born in Wayne County to the late Florence Rouse Dawson and Joseph Benjamin Dawson. After the death of her mother, she was raised by Beatrice Head Dawson. She was an active member of the New Hope Friends Meeting where she sang alto in the choir and did all that she could to serve in her church. She retired as a business professional after operating the License Plate Agency and the bookkeeper for Wilber’s BBQ.
She was a loving mother, Granny, sister, Aunt “A”, and friend. She loved the Lord and her church family, where she served at the New Hope Friends Meeting. She also had a love for gospel music and flowers. She had a green thumb for sure. Eleanor was blessed to have so many loyal life-long friends to share the wonderful memories and experiences with her over the years. Above all, she loved spending time her family, her grandchildren, and great grandchildren.
She was survived by her two sons, Eugene Pope, and Jackie Pope and friend Tish Byerly of Goldsboro; her daughter Laura Gurley of LaGrange; grandchildren, Kelli Gurley Hamm and husband Michael, and William Chad Gurley and wife Jessica; great grandchildren Miles Hamm, Caroline Hamm, Reagan Gurley, and Gray Gurley; and many special nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her son-in-law, William Pat Gurley, her brothers Linwood Dawson, Farrell Dawson (Sandra), and Shelton Dawson (Minnie).
The family would like to give a very special thank you for all the acts of kindness shown to them during this time of bereavement. Your love, prayers, visits, and memorial tributes are greatly appreciated. Thank you to the wonderful staff at Community Homecare and Hospice and Kitty Askins for the love and care they provided, to the healthcare providers that served in her home, and the special visits from her church family and close friends.
The family requests that memorials be made to New Hope Friends Meeting, of Goldsboro and/or Community Homecare and Hospice, of Goldsboro.
