Percy Thomas Benton

Tom Benton died Saturday at Wayne Memorial Hospital.

He was a native of Suffolk, Virginia where he was preceded in death by his parents, Elsie Hudson Benton and Alfred Lee Benton, Sr. and brothers; Alfred "Buck" Lee Benton Jr. and Samuel "Sam" Benton.

Mr. Benton had a life-long career in Law Enforcement and Security. His more notable accomplishments included serving in the US Marine Corps first as a military policeman, then Drill Sergeant to new recruits at Paris Island, SC, Chief of Police, a supervisory CID and NCIS agent, a forensics and crime lab director, a deputy provost Marshall, a security consultant, a college and university instructor. He was a 1968 graduate of the FBI National Academy and served his country during the Korean Conflict.

In public service, he served as Havelock City Commissioner and was a two-time recipient of the Order of the Long Leaf Pine - the highest award given to a civilian by NC's governor. Named "Man of the Year" by the Havelock Jaycees and received the Silver Beaver Award by the East Carolina Council of the Boy Scouts of America recognizing his many years of leadership to the organization.

Surviving is his wife Perla Ebilane Benton, sons; Ronald Edward Benton (Linda) of Glen Allen, VA, Richard Gary Benton (Marjean) of Bakersville, NC, Steven Douglas "Pete" Benton (Dr. Cindy Wiley) of Goldsboro, Mark Thomas Benton (Thomas McGinnis) of Raleigh, Ryan Thomas Benton (Imee) of Charlotte. Daughters; Tomi Ann Benton Rogers (Bill) of Asheville, Sara Mae "Mai Mai" Benton of Goldsboro. Sister; Lillian Ann Benton Eason (Bill) of Suffork, VA. Step-children; Marla Perez, Marlon Landero and Maricris Manalili all of the Philippines.

Grandchildren: Erik Rogers (Kara), Billy Rogers (Emily), Kristi Scholz (Lloyd), Alison Smith (Thomas), Brad Benton (Richelle), Jeff Benton (Stephanie), Katy Benton, Dylan Benton (Daniela) and Anthony Cammon (Jill).

Great-Grandchildren; Nelson William Rogers, Braxton and Wes Scholz, Blake and Ashley Smith, Baylor and Campbell Benton, Lita, Hiram, Michah and Isaac Cammon, Vincent Dukette, El Marvic and El Marcus Perez, Marionne Landero, Isay, Iloy and Imay Manalili.

Memorial Service with military honors will be held on Saturday, January 7th at 11AM at St. Mary's Catholic Church, 1000 N. Jefferson Avenue Goldsboro with Rev. Ryan Rasmussen presiding. Special music provided by Thomas McGinnis, Willard Jackson and Lt. Col. Norm Taflinger.
